With gentle guidance, reflective writing prompts and conversations, you’ll discover how writing can become a meaningful practice for cultivating compassion, reflection and insight and authentic connection.

No previous experience of creative writing is necessary. Just bring paper, pen and curiosity.

@stoneygatecentre improves patients’ lives by pioneering a new approach to medical education and training that places empathy at the heart of healthcare. Its goal is to equip the NHS with empathic, compassionate, and resilient healthcare practitioners. Its research and partnerships will support the practice and structure of empathic healthcare in the UK and beyond.

@drhlfoster is a community-engaged writer, researcher, writing for wellbeing practitioner and poetry-film-maker. She is a Creative Writing Associate at the Centre for Empathic Healthcare at the University of Leicester Medical School where she is working on a poetry film project about menopause.

She has worked with a range of creative organisations and community agencies, including Writing East Midlands, Shine Lincolnshire and Old Bird Theatre Company, designing and delivering writing for wellbeing programmes for diverse audiences, including carers, people living with mental health challenges, people experiencing isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic and women living without children.

She is a writer in residence for CILIP, the Chartered Institute for Librarians and Information Professionals.

She holds a PhD in Creative Writing and her latest co-authored book, Arts for Health: Creative Writing, is out now with Emerald Press.

*CREATIVE CLINIC SINGING CIRCLE ANNOUNCEMENT*

We are excited to announce our upcoming event! Join us as GP, Coach and musician Grace McGeoch @thenaturalsing leads us in an evening of singing from the comfort of home.

This online event will begin with a gentle warm-up to help you find your voice and settle into your body. We will learn songs by ear and experience the benefits of singing together.

No previous musical experience required.

In the online environment no one else can hear you - a perfect opportunity if you’re new to singing! You’ll be able to hear Grace’s voice, and harmonies she provides with a loop station, so you will experience the feeling of singing with other voices. There will be a chance to share reflections at the end of the hour.

Last night we showed up for ourselves on the page. Led by final year medical student @elle.tallgren, the Creative Clinic community went on a journey into journaling.

In a calm and reflective hour, Elle shared her own experiences of committing time to paper and encouraged us with gentle visual and written prompts to make space for ourselves through writing.

One of our biggest gatherings to date, we were so honoured to welcome friends, new and old, and there was still plenty of time for generous sharing with a kind and considerate group.

Thank you Elle and all our attendees for a wonderful evening. We hope you will continue with your journaling and let us know how it is going!

What a night! Last night the Creative Clinic community assembled once more for a gorgeous evening of poetry.

We were thrilled to welcome @mollycasespeaks as our guest headliner. Poet and nurse Molly read three of her moving, lyrical poems, weaving beauty and care in to the clinical. None of us will think of spinal anaesthesia in the same way!

Molly then shared some tips and inspiration from her own writing practice, in a fascinating Q&A. Thank you Molly, for joining us.

Then it was on to the open mic and we were treated to poems that were funny, emotional, evocative and all so moving. We feel so honoured to be able to host these events and hear these poems.

Thank you to our open mic poets for sharing, and to all who attended for creating such a positive space to pour out these words.

With the festive season fading and the warmth of spring still a little out of reach, this is the season of ‘small gifts’ - little kindnesses we give to ourselves and others, moments of sharing, reflection and inspiration.

At Creative Clinic, our goal for 2026 is to continue to nurture and grow this lovely community, where creative practices help us to flourish as professionals and individuals.

Our next event is our ‘Small Gifts Poetry Night’ and we are excited to welcome our headliner and guest, poet @mollycasespeaks

Molly is a writer, spoken-word poet and nurse born and raised in south London. She currently works in palliative and end-of-life care. Her writing has been described as “poetic and compassionate” by The Sunday Times Best Memoirs, and as “a hymn to the art and science of nursing itself” by The Guardian. Her first book, How to Treat People, was published by Viking (Penguin) in 2019. She is currently working on her first novel and a new spoken-word collection exploring living and dying across her city.

All are welcome to come and listen to what promises to be an inspiring night of poetry and spoken word.

Running weekly, on Tuesday evenings through late February and March: refocus, relax and recharge as Liz guides you through fun and inspiring drawing activities that support wellbeing using easily accessible art materials.

In the first workshop of this series, we will be looking at mandala designs.

No previous drawing experience necessary!

@liz_atkin is an artist and educator. She reimagines her Compulsive Skin Picking and anxiety into drawings, photographs and performances and as a mental health advocate, raises awareness for the disorder around the world.

She has exhibited and taught in the UK, Europe, Australia, USA, Singapore and Japan. Her work is permanently held in many locations including the Wellcome Collection. Liz teaches art in schools, hospitals, hospices, prisons, arts venues and universities.

She is an ambassador for The Big Draw, the world’s largest drawing festival, focusing on the role of creativity for health and wellbeing.

Liz ran some workshops for Creative Clinic in 2025 and we are so pleased to be welcoming her back again. We know from our feedback that previous attendees enjoyed her ‘gentle guidance’, ‘finding flow and focus’ and ‘doing something different’.

@liz_atkin is an artist and educator. She reimagines her Compulsive Skin Picking and anxiety into drawings, photographs and performances and as a mental health advocate, raises awareness for the disorder around the world.

She has exhibited and taught in the UK, Europe, Australia, USA, Singapore and Japan. Her work is permanently held in many locations including the Wellcome Collection. Liz teaches art in schools, hospitals, hospices, prisons, arts venues and universities.

She is an ambassador for The Big Draw, the world’s largest drawing festival, focusing on the role of creativity for health and wellbeing.

Liz ran some workshops for Creative Clinic in 2025 and we are so pleased to be welcoming her back again. We know from our feedback that previous attendees enjoyed her ‘gentle guidance’, ‘finding flow and focus’ and ‘doing something different’.

What a better way to spend a cold Thursday evening, than with the Creative Clinic community and a writing workshop that felt like a warm hug, a deep breath and a mini Fudge all rolled in to one!

GP and Writer Eleanor Holmes @beniellie led us for a wonderful hour, with beautiful prompts based on writing from Samantha Harvey, Lucille Clifton
and @osmond_beth.

We channelled our eight senses and took inspiration from our own special items or ‘desk treasures’ as one of our participants calls them. (Aruna’s was this drawing of Wendy Cope’s Orange, made by her son)

She is an incredible poet who was published in the amazing These are the hands NHS poetry anthology edited by @poetry_pharmacy_

We will reflect on this process together and share some practical tips on building an analogue writing habit.

Flourishing through Creative Enquiry

Flourishing enables a shift in the wellbeing dialogue from mere resilience and “toughing it out” alone towards relational focus on connection, meaning and purpose (Aristotle’s eudaimonia), fostering compassionate engagement with both our humanity and that of others.

Creative enquiry – exploring our lived experience through the arts – has been found in medical education to nurture flourishing spaces within the curriculum.

Louise Younie is a General Practitioner and Professor of Medical Education at @officialqmul where she leads on faculty development and innovation. She draws on co-creative and creative enquiry methodologies for humanising medicine. She is co-chair of the @royalcollegeofgps Creative Health Special Interest Group (SIG), a National Teaching Fellow (2022) and Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her ‘Flourishing Spaces’ programme received the silver QS Global Education Award in the ‘nurturing wellbeing and purpose’ category, 2024.

Flourishing enables a shift in the wellbeing dialogue from mere resilience and “toughing it out” alone towards relational focus on connection, meaning and purpose (Aristotle’s eudaimonia), fostering compassionate engagement with both our humanity and that of others.

Creative enquiry – exploring our lived experience through the arts – has been found in medical education to nurture flourishing spaces within the curriculum.

Louise Younie is a General Practitioner and Professor of Medical Education at @officialqmul where she leads on faculty development and innovation. She draws on co-creative and creative enquiry methodologies for humanising medicine. She is co-chair of the @royalcollegeofgps Creative Health Special Interest Group (SIG), a National Teaching Fellow (2022) and Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her ‘Flourishing Spaces’ programme received the silver QS Global Education Award in the ‘nurturing wellbeing and purpose’ category, 2024.

Dr Nirja Joshi aka @doctor_dancing will be hosting an online dance workshop in the theme of Beyonce!

We know that dance is so beneficial for the body and mind, and we want to open up an opporunity for you to move your bodies without judgement with us online.

You do not have to have any prior experience - and left and rights truly dont matter as you will be in your own home.

Dancing is a mindful activity which can get you away from your everyday routine - just bring yourselves!

Kids/ housemates welcome to join too!

This workshop costs £5 (all money goes to Nirja) and can be booked via eventbrite (see bio for link).

What a fantastic evening with @liz_atkin at our first Draw to Unwind workshop!

Liz guided us through creating texture with simple pencils and biros.

The hour flew by and we produced some amazing art but more importantly we relaxed and had fun.

Drawing helps us to enter a mindful flow state, lowering cortisol and boosting wellbeing.

Come and try it for yourself on 4 November when we will be drawing using those staple medical supplies - tea and coffee!

We have some exciting news! In February we submitted a proposal to be part of a programme of ‘special edition’ events hosted by @nationalpoetrylibrary

We recently learnt that our submission was accepted and we have been invited to take part in an online health-themed poetry showcase in the evening of Wednesday 19th November 2025!

We have a 10 minute slot, and would like to deliver this as a pre-recorded video containing your poems! So, we are OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS!

We are taking poems from all UK medical students and doctors.

Here’s what we need you to do:
Send us a video recording of you reading your own poem on the theme ‘Beyond the Bedside’.
The video must be filmed in landscape and should be maximum 2 minutes long.
You can introduce the poem by title but we will add your preferred name and role in the captions to save time.

Send us your poems to crxeate@gmail.com by Sunday 28th September 2025.

We are looking forward to receiving your submissions and will endeavour to include as much of your work as possible though, given the time restriction, we hope you will understand that it may not be possible to include all the work we receive.
