WINTER WATERCOLOUR PAINTING ONLINE WORKSHOP

We’ll go over a few basic techniques of how to use the materials and then paint a seasonal piece in your own style - this could be a perfect Christmas present!

Suitable for complete beginners!

What you’ll need:
Watercolour (or thick cartridge) paper
Watercolour paints, tubes or in a palette
Watercolour pencils if you have them, don’t worry if you don’t
Water in a jar
Brushes (horsehair soft style ones with a point are best)
Waterproof fineliner or biro if you have one
Tissue
Hairdryer can help when you’re layering the paints.

Nell has been a community artist for over 20 years. Founding the studio Arty Farty Retreat in 2017. She holds a Ba in Fine Art:Painting and has worked with the arts in health and social care for over 15 years. Nell has worked with children and adults in a variety of settings: Hospices; Learning disability centres; Hospitals; After school clubs; Hen parties; Nursing homes; Children’s parties and more.

After moving into the ‘management world’ for a little while, Nell decided to take the leap and go back to her creative roots. Arty Farty Retreat has been running now for more than 7 years and is always growing and adapting to the changing needs of the community!

Nell’s own work is currently in a more abstract figurative stage, however, she keeps multiple sketchbooks on the go always practicing with different styles and materials!

What is a Zine? Made popular in the punk era, it’s a small mini magazine created a small piece of artwork to share with the world! We’ll be using collage and mixed media.

Nell will explain more about the amazing history of zines and what you can use them for! We’ll then create a zine together, but with a big warning…. Zine’s are addictive!

What you will need:
– A3 piece of paper
– Scissors
– Magazines/newspapers to collage with
– Glue stick
– Anything else you want! Pens, pencils, felt tips, acrylic paint pens, paints, oil pastels, chalks, even a biro will work!!

Dr Tara George, GP and creative health fellow with The Hub+ Derbyshire will take us on a whistlestop tour of some of the evidence base for using creativity for ourselves, for teaching students and for our patients.

Tara is a GP in Wingerworth, Derbyshire and the lead Training Programme Director for the Chesterfield and Derbyshire Dales GP Speciality Training Programme.

She is currently undertaking a fellowship in Creative Health with The Hub+ Derbyshire as well as hosting the medical humanities @bedsidereadingpodcast since 2021.

Tara undertakes a number of freelance educational roles in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education including honorary senior clinical lecturer roles at QMUL and Sheffield. She is part of the exec for Don’t Forget the Bubbles, a paediatric FOAMedEd organisation.

In her spare time she is a voracious reader, a baker and eater of cakes and acknowledges that theatre, running and Rockbox classes are vital strategies to survive in the 2026 NHS.

What a night! On Monday we were treated to an evening of poetry from two of our favourites.

Eleanor Holmes @beniellie and Beth Osmond @osmond_beth read from their latest publications, Moth and Hatchery, and shared generously their experiences of putting their words out into the world.

We talked about ‘hybrid’ prose/ poetry, and were encouraged to play and rip up the rule books! It was also wonderful to hear how poetry has been an amazing ‘therapeutic outlet’.

We also mentioned some other amazing poets who have inspired Beth and Eleanor with special mentions to:

After a five-minute free-write to get our creativity flowing, we turned to familiar objects in an exercise that channelled mindfulness and a sense of wonder in the familiar. We talked teaspoons and trees, glasses for seeing and favourite mugs for that morning cuppa!

We closed with a wonderful ‘silent coaching’ in which participants were invited to reflect on their hopes and give themselves permission to take those crucial next steps on whatever projects await. We’d love to hear what you have planned!

Last week, we were joined by two creative medics from our community for a ‘Creative Conversation’.

@raybould_sarah and @lily_and_lyra Krupa Patel shared their creative journeys into poetry and visual art, and how they make it work alongside their medical careers.

For this uplifting hour, we explored the benefits and the challenges of making space to make. Accountability, perfectionism and permission were keywords.

Creativity as healing was felt strongly throughout.

Today we’re thinking about thinking! Thinking time is a huge part of the creative process and for many getting out and about is a great way to stimulate our creative brains.

I was a bit low on artistic materials for one of our Draw to Unwind sessions with @liz_atkin and ended up painting autumnal leaves in the medium of gravy! It worked quite well actually!
